What's the Truth Behind That Saying? Anything Excess is bad as per Bhagwat Gita
Anything Excess is bad as per Bhagwat Gita

The Bhagwat Gita is a Hindu scripture that is the most sacred of all Hindu scriptures. It has been translated into many languages and it is available in different versions. The one about which we are speaking to you now, as per this version, says: “Anything taken in excess becomes bad”.
What does that mean? Does it mean that when you take something at the right level, it becomes good? Or does it mean that when you take something at the wrong level, it becomes bad?
How do we know what level of intake is just right for us? To find out this answer and also to see if anything else can be derived from this statement in the Bhagwat Gita, read on to learn

Gita warned that overeating is bad. Lord Krishna in Shlokas 6.16 and 6.17 says that those who have a habit of eating or sleeping too much, or too little, will not succeed in doing yoga. All the troubles of those who are controlled by food, sleep, wake and recreation; and perform their duties diligently, reducing the practice of yoga.

What is the Truth Behind That Saying?

Anything Excess Is Bad, As per Bhagwat Gita MANTRA: ANYTHING THAT COMES AFTER 2 BARS OF SWEETENED MILK IS A “CURE” FOR DIABETES. You say,” He drinks orange juice at lunch. Can’t that be healthy? It comes only in small glasses. Why should we put it on the food list?” Correct Answer: Any form of a sugary drink is a “cure” for diabetes. In our words, it is nothing but poison. Orange juice, apple juice, cola (and its soda like a brother — Kool-Aid) have all been harmful to diabetics. Moreover, this thing has been in existence for thousands of years and there is no major change in it. Any beverage that is sweet is unhealthy, for example – An old European beer – wine, condensed milk (yes, they also put it in coffee), a glass of cream mixed in coffee, plain thick curd, you get the drift.

Does it mean that when you take something in excess, it becomes bad?

a) No. That is not what the Bhagwat Gita says. b) Yes. It means that when you take something in excess, it becomes bad. However, if you consume something at the right level then it becomes good. The difficulty with the term “in excess” is that it can be stretched out of proportion. The big issue with this statement is that it is oversimplified. This verse is actually saying “Excess is bad”. But it does not specify why it is bad. Why should that be? We already know the reason: things taken in excess are bad. But you also know that the question is not just about taking something in excess. That question can be easily answered. It is about what is taken. It is not about how much is taken. You know what an excess of something is. You know what an appropriate amount of something is.

Or does it mean that when you take something at the wrong level, it becomes bad?

According to this claim, in any case, anything which is taken in excess becomes bad and any right level intake, whether it is excessive or adequate, is good. So, for instance, if someone’s body craves a particular food and he is taking appropriate levels of intake then he must be consuming good things and not bad things. So how do we know what level of intake is just right for us? To find out this answer and also to see if anything else can be derived, we look to our soul, which is most capable of knowing us well. The soul itself is so great that in all probability the soul in our body will know what is good for us. So we can say that anything which is good for the soul is good for us.

How do we know what level of intake is just right for us?

How do we know that anything is just right for us? How do we know anything is really good for us? We do not. But we know how bad anything is for us and that is my experience. Sometimes we feel bad but we do not know what exactly it is that is causing it. In fact, it could be that the feeling is pleasant but we are not cognizant of it and that is why we feel bad. We are then not aware of the truth. Or we may know but we do not want to understand it because it is bad for us and so we try to stay away from it. Yet when we take something at the right level, that too at the wrong level, we start having the feeling. This gives us the knowledge that what we are taking in is no good for us. So this knowledge comes to us only by experience.

The Bhagwat Gita - A detailed description

According to the book, The Bhagwat Gita, it is one of the most concise, classic, profound, and simple scriptures on all aspects of life. If you want to know how to do anything from money to meditation, the Bhagwat Gita is the right choice. It is literally the gospel of many, many people. Let’s see how it is possible to understand something so simple, so brief, so profound. It starts with explaining what is meant by anything taken at the wrong level. According to this doctrine, it is taking something at the wrong level that becomes bad. Here we have to see what is meant by “wrong” level. The way we look at it here is that if something is taken at the wrong level, it is inimical to human life. Therefore, if something is taken at the wrong level, it becomes bad.

Conclusion

I am trying to make people think in terms of gaining knowledge rather than just getting knowledge and learning from it. If knowledge is acquired through the wrong source (like movies or anything that grabs your attention for a very short period of time), then the real knowledge which is acquired through the right source is worthless and is useless. It will lead us nowhere. I hope that after reading these definitions you can make a strong choice and decide to not fall into those wrong books and not eat any food that has false claims of being healthy for the moment. The right choice is the one that will lead you to real peace of mind and health.
